About Stone Soup Magazine

Stone Soup is the print magazine written and illustrated by young writers and artists. It is the leading publisher of creative writing by children ages 8 to 13. Most of Stone Soup’s subscribers are in the U.S. and Canada, but we also have subscribers in other countries.

We are William Rubel and Gerry Mandel, the founders and editors of Stone Soup. We started Stone Soup in 1973, in Santa Cruz, California, because we believed quality writing by children would inspire other children to read and write. At the time we were college students, just barely not children ourselves, and there was no academic work to support our idea. But this thesis is now accepted by mainstream American and Canadian textbook publishers. Stories and poems have been reprinted from Stone Soup in more than one-hundred educational publications. When you give Stone Soup to a child as a gift, or when you use Stone Soup in your homeschool or classroom, you can feel assured that there is no better source of inspiring writing by children to be found.

Stone Soup is published six times a year, in January, March, May, July, September, and November. When you subscribe to Stone Soup, you not only give a valuable gift to a young writer or artist, but you also support our project. Thank you.
