We published our first issue of Stone Soup in 1973! Then, we were idealistic university students. Now, we are idealistic middle-aged editors! Our belief remains the same: that young people can create works of astonishing power. We read carefully through every story and poem sent to us (over ten thousand works a year) to select those that combine both beautiful writing and original ideas. We select works that are worth reading over and over again; works that will inspire our readers to excel. Young people are flooded by images and stories that are mass-produced by the entertainment industry. Stone Soup stands for genuine originality and avoids cliché. We look to encourage jewels: the writing of stories that capture a bit of life, beautifully.
