Danged if I know.
One of my jobs is as an Artist In Residence, teaching fifth graders at one school about how to make clay tiles for an installation in their school.
Most of these contests are open to children from primary and middle school -- the primary age range of Stone Soup's readers. We are all familiar with child writers but much less so with child composers. This is an exciting time in the history of music. For the first time, we are beginning to see a real body of work by child composers.
Poetry is meant to be recited. Recited poetry has its own cadence, one that is a little different from spoken English. The poem by the Mikaela Miller speaks to her growing sense of self-identity -- it is a coming of age poem.
British Composer, Alma Deutscher (born 2005) is one of the many young composers who are invariably compared by TV interviewers with Mozart, the composer who lived a couple hundred years ago. This comparison is more because few people know about how many fabulous young composers there have been. Alma offers a strong defense of herself -- listen to me -- she says -- don't compare.

Introduction to This Stone Soup Writing Activity
“Once Upon a Time” is an example of a story written in unusual English. This work is by a six-year-old and is a good example of how young children express themselves differently from older children and adults. You will find lots of run-on sentences and dreamlike images flowing one into another.
I purchased these paintings from Semachw Messfn in Ethiopia in 2004. Sumachaw was ten years old. He is a Coptic Christian. This is an ancient branch of Christianity. These paintings are made within an ancient tradition of Coptic religious art. There are religions that embrace religious paintings. Christianity, Buddhism, and Hinduism are examples.
