I Express Myself
Fatehbir, 9
I will sit quietly and write in my journal.
When I am happy, I laugh or smile.
If I am sad, I may shed tears.
If I am angry, I may stomp my feet or sit quietly in my room or shout.
If I am excited, I may say, “I wish this day was over” to get to what I wanted.
If I am really happy, I may start to cry because of my happiness or my laughter.
Pick a postcard from this digitized historical collection at the New York Public Library. Write a historical fiction short story that involves a character sending this postcard to someone. What do they write on the postcard? Who are they sending it to? Make sure to take note of what year the postcard is from to know when to set your story.

0:18 - How were you introduced to Stone Soup?
When I was little, I didn’t have to go to temple on Yom Kippur. I got to go to the basement and make cool crafts. Every year, I would watch my sister and my parents walk into the big room with the colorful windows and get jealous. I would always wonder why they got to go into the cool room but I had to stay downstairs.
The winds here slap my face; there, they tickle me gently. The animals here are rare and restrained; there, they are my closest friends. The food here is easy to get; there, it is grown and preserved. Here, noises are loud, buzzing, annoying; there, it’s soothing and simple. Why did I agree? Why did I come? Why did I fall For her trick? What should I think? What should I do?
Brrrrr! It’s freezing out here! There is only one extremely long tunnel to get in or out. Look! There is only one tall building in this whole place! Where are the rest? Welcome to the tall but small, wild and wonderous Whittier, Alaska. The community under one roof!
Last year, my family and I went on a vacation to Alaska.

COVID: The Normality Thief
Jane Lee, 12
Before Covid, my mom used to yell
“Hurry or you’ll miss the bell!”
My dad would add, “You're going to be late!”
But then the pandemic changed our fate
I miss
The rumble of the bus
Even though I had to rush
I miss having a freshly sharpened pencil
As a writing utensil
Replaced by the clacking sound
of a keyb...

Wind over water, sky over sea, riding the ocean, come, wait for me, alone on the sand, waiting for thee, riding the ocean, come, wait for me. The birds are a-chirping, the skies are like new, the wind is a-howling, an endless plane of endless blue. Shimmering so brightly, too bright for my eyes, hoping for a dream that will never come true.

I ran as fast as I could. Dashing through the thick brush. The moon followed. I heard loud footsteps behind me. I ran faster. Then I came across an abandoned building. I ran towards the building as a dark figure approached the clearing I had been at before. The dark figure looked around to see where I was. With no luck of finding me, it walked awa.
