Frederick Ouseley (1825-1889) was a British musician and composer. He specialized in church music. He started writing music when he was three -- his sister transcribed those first pieces. A couple hundred pages of early manuscripts exist and I am hopeful that I can get a copy of them. They are at the Bodleian in Oxford, UK.

This is what he says about the piece, "My video is about waking up on a freezing, sunny day and looking out the window at my neighbourhood. I snapped some pictures of nature and a lot of ugly buildings some how snuck in to the shots. I liked the effect and I hope you like it too."

Young Composer Nathan Grabow, age 12

Nathan Grabow, a young American composer and pianist performs his original composition entitled Concertino in G Minor for Piano and Strings. He wrote the piece when he was twelve years old and is thirteen at the time of this performance with the Marywood University String Project Presto Orchestra, which is a youth orchestra. Nathan plays the piano in this performance.

This writing activity is built around 11-year-old Ella Staats' story, "My Mother's Little Girl'" published in Stone Soup in September/October 2012. Read the story and then work on your project, which is write a story with two lead characters. But before you write the story, write a full character development, at least two typed pages long, for each of the characters.

This project is inspired by the language of a very young boy. In the first years of Stone Soup, in the mid-1970s, we were fortunate to publish poems and stories written by an extraordinary child, James Lindbloom.
