I sigh. Summer is so hot in Florida that I think I’ll burn into a pile of ashes. It’s not as hot in Massachusetts, where I used to live. I peer at a squirrel scurrying by. Since I have nothing else to do, I follow it.
It races across the sidewalk and rushes into the Everglades. I pause. No one will notice if I’m gone, I have no family. I step in after the squirrel.

I am standing in my backyard. The trees are tall, towering over me. The birds land on the ground, pecking and pulling worms from the earth. One lands on my hand. It looks like an oriole, with the grey feathers and red belly. I open my palm, with seeds inside for it. The oriole pecks at my hand, reaching for the seeds. It doesn’t hurt. More orioles come. One lands on each finger.
Preface
Stone Soup has been an inspiration to me for a long time, from when I first starting reading it as a ten-year-old, never even considering that I could submit and have the chance to be published, to now, when I have been published in the magazine several times, have attended countless Writing Workshops and Book Clubs, and have been interning with Stone Soup for the better part of a year.

“Who I Really Am” by Rachael, 10
My mothers walk out the door. Their footsteps make hollow echoing sounds against the driveway. The car door slams shut hard. One mom was always angry about something or another. I look through my different colored eyes at my bare calloused feet, brown from grime, against the cracked linoleum floor.

Confusion Itself By Peri Gordon, 11
It was Wednesday at 9am, I think, and I was sipping my coffee and walking to work when I saw her. Well, first I heard her shouting, and then I looked over, and then I saw the top of her purple stack of hair. I took the time to follow the fluffy pile down to the bottom, and I found a face died green with violet eyes and lips made to be the color of the ocean.

Hi, today I am going to tell you what I did for Diwali. For us, Diwali started on Friday, November 14th and ended on Monday, November 18th.
First Day of Diwali
The first day was "Naraka Chathurdasi." I woke up early and brushed my teeth. My mom put tilak on my forehead. Then, she applied oil to all the family members. After that, I took an oil bath. Then, I prayed to god.
