Write a dialogue between three friends going on a picnic.
Write a poem about your favorite place to be.
Write a vivid description of a pleasant smell. It could be freshly baked cookies, an herb garden, a character’s perfume or anything else that comes to mind.
Choose one of these photos from the collection of street photographer Vivian Maier. Imagine the context behind the photo and write a short story that captures the scene in words.
Write a story about someone stranded on an island. How did they get there? How do they survive? What few items do they have with them? Invent the circumstances and a way for your character to escape.
Take a photograph that captures a mundane domestic scene, but with one detail amiss. Maybe it’s the inside of your refrigerator, but with a book in it. Whatever you can think of that would make the viewer look twice. Think carefully about the composition of the piece and stage the scene as much as you can.
What song have you had on repeat lately? Write a poem that incorporates the song.
Brew some tea or coffee and splatter it on a piece of paper. Draw something using the stains as your guide.
Write about what would happen to novel or fairytale characters if they existed in real life. Think about practical conventions that might surprise them. For example, Prince Charming (Sleeping Beauty) might balk at getting a job; Jo March (Little Women) isn’t an obvious candidate for make-up vlogger.
Rewrite an exciting episode from a favorite novel as a Ballad at least 30 lines long.
