Writing Activity: working with stream of consciousness

Stream of consciousness can be an effective writing style to use when you have a character who sees and thinks very differently from the other characters. This project is inspired by the language of a very young boy. In the first years of Stone Soup, in the mid-1970s, we were fortunate to publish poems and stories written by an extraordinary child, James Lindbloom.

We all eat, and many of us like to cook. If you are 13 or under and like to cook, we'd like you to submit recipes to Stone Soup. We will publish the best of them in Stone Soup Online and, over time, when we have a enough really really good ones, we will publish a cookbook.

Cat Pictures by Children!

These are three very different approaches to making pictures of cats. But, what they have in common are the dynamic personalities of the cats that were models for the pictures. Each looks at us, as cats do, with their unique expressions. These pictures come from Oman, Lithuania, and Germany.

Children’s Art from Switzerland

These paintings from children in Switzerland were created in the 1960s. We particularly love the old fashioned zoo scenes where children ride elephants. Two street scenes from the city of Basel show a clear winter day and grey winter day. Both are wonderfully evocative of a city in winter in Northern climates. Note the fabulous old black convertible in the grey scene.

Some of this wonderful tradition is reflected in this beautiful painting by Vika Sycheva, 8, where colorful birds and an eight-legged animal walk on a planet with five suns. This is a world from fairy tales, dreams, ballet. A world of rich fantasy.

Introduction to this Stone Soup Writing and Art Activity "The Enchanted Egg” is a delightful story that plays with ideas and characters commonly found in fairy tales (and in cartoons of fairy tales). This is not a profoundly original story, but it is well written, beautifully illustrated, and fun to read.
