Look closely at the picture above and take a guess as to what it is. A banana? A rock wall? The skin of a kiwi? I asked my friends and family what they thought the photo looked like, and they were all stumped. If you look even closer, you might realize that this is a picture of a pinecone. I took this picture using a microscope in my science class, revealing the pinecone’s details.
Aayan and Abhiram compose the "Anti-Littering Team," where they do campaigns, conduct events with other children, and spread awareness about not littering and segregating waste. This is their first song titled “For your generations." The song is written by Aayan and sung by both Aayan and Abhiram.
I sense a fragrance
Like old memories and new
Peace drifts through the air
Cherry blossoms bloom
With memory of winter
Lingering softly
Lush meadows grow tall
As nature opens its eyes
Leaves of spring glow green
My Friend the Shark
Paris Andreou Hadjipavlou, 8
When I grow up I want to learn a lot about sharks and protect them. For now me and my little brother remove from the beach plastic bottles and garbage so that they do not harm my animal friends. I also draw sharks all the time and try to spread awareness! Maybe I have hundreds of them. They fill me up with excitement and joy.
An update from our sixty-sixth Writing Workshop
A summary of the workshop held on Saturday, May 21st
In this workshop, students practiced writing descriptively about the natural world with examples from J. R. R. Tolkien. William showed pictures of various landscapes, including a few he had taken himself, and as a mini-challenge, had students describe what they saw.
Let the trees embrace you,
With their long and leafy arms,
Their thick and trusty branches,
Reach up like vines
To a star speckled sky.
The wildebeest are roaming,
On the dark and murky plain,
They pace until the shining moon
Shines ever so brightly
In a star speckled sky
The giraffes are chewing leafy greens,
That are hang...
Our Ocean Wildlife
Poorvi Girish, 8
When I was about 4 years old, I used to wonder in bed at night “Are oceans dangerous or is it the oceans that are in danger?” As an 8 year old, I have learned about the ocean’s alarming rates of pollution.
Lately, scientists have noticed how this has an effect on ocean wildlife.
The 5.
Go to a safe place outdoors, sit somewhere, and close your eyes. Spend several minutes listening for all the sounds you can hear, and pay close attention to what you can smell in the air. When you open your eyes again, write some notes. Later, use those notes to write a poem or a personal narrative about your experience of the place through those two senses (smell and hearing).

Where I live, it is usually pretty pleasant this time of the year. So, my school arranged an outdoor school to enjoy the weather and allow us to learn more about nature. Nature is so beautiful, and we need to look outside more often, and be more mesmerized by its endless beauty. Anyways, let me share a little about what I learned in my science class—let's talk about fractals and FBI.
Machu Picchu Viscachas
Priscilla Chow, 8
My family and I traveled on a train from Cusco to Machu Picchu. Once we got there at noon, we spotted two Machu Picchu viscachas on a wall. I asked our tour guide why there were squirrels there and he said that they're Machu Picchu viscachas. They looked like squirrels to me; they were just a little bigger.
